ITMA 2019: Three Questions about ITMA to Marcus Mayer, Dr. Wolfgang Bauer and Bernd Boss

“Innovating the World of Textiles” is the motto of this year’s ITMA, which will take place in Barcelona from 20 to 26 June. The international textile and garment industry exhibition has been held since 1951 and is the industry highlight every four years. Reason enough to ask what makes it so special.

From Research and Development we hear from Marcus Mayer, Managing Director, Dr. Wolfgang Bauer, Head of R & D, and Bernd Boss, in charge of Patents and Technical Documentation, about their personal ITMA experiences.

1. Which was the first ITMA you attended, for Mayer & Cie. or for another company?

Dr. Wolfgang Bauer: My first ITMA was in Milan in 1983. Back then I was still a student.
Marcus Mayer: Mine was in Hannover in 1991. I was still a student at the Technical High School in Balingen.
Bernd Boss: I first attended the 2007 ITMA in Munich.

2. What does the ITMA mean for you personally?

Marcus Mayer: ITMA (Europe) is the Champions League of textile machinery manufacturing. It is a trade fair at which you really have to stand out and show really new developments if you want to be a market and technology leader. It is the optimal platform on which to discuss with customers trends and their expectations and wishes. And to recognise new trends in knitting that come from the customers… An absolute must!
Bernd Boss: The opportunity to see products and innovations from across textile technology, and not just the circular knitting sector, in the flesh and experience them from close up. It is simply impressive.
Dr. Wolfgang Bauer: ITMA is for me the world’s most important technology and textile machinery trade fair. Visitors come from all over the world and bring with them the widest range of applications in order to discuss them quite openly. Getting to know that bandwidth and depth was a most important experience for me.

3. What was your personal ITMA highlight?

Bernd Boss: For me the highlight of every ITMA is being able to take a practical look at the competitors’ products – mainly, of course, with patent law aspects in mind.
Dr. Wolfgang Bauer: My absolute highlight was the presentation of spinning and knitting technology at Barcelona in 2011.
Marcus Mayer: The presentation of the SPINIT machine at the 2011 ITMA in Barcelona really was extraordinary. The machine stood in a 95% opaque glass case. There were only two small windows through which visitors to the booth could take a look at the machine. If you wanted a guided tour of the glass case you had to register and wait for up to two days. Interest was unbroken and customers were constantly trying to access the room somehow or other even without an appointment. We had to assign a doorman to keep the situation under control… That truly was something special.
