The Mayer & Cie. training program for Indian knitting technicians right on schedule.
Fourth course at the PPP Training Centre in Tirupur successfully completed.

As part of a joint project with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) on behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, Mayer & Cie - the world's leading manufacturer of circular knitting machines - committed to a Public Private Partnership (PPP) aimed at providing training for knitting specialists in India. Mayer & Cie.'s involvement in the project is being supported by Batliboi Ltd, Mayer & Cie.'s Mumbai-based agent and industrial partner in India.

The first PPP training centre in Tirupur opened its doors in January 2001, and is now already running its 5th 6-month course. At the end of 2002, the fourth training semester was successfully completed. In the presence of Dieter Klinger, Head of Marketing at Mayer & Cie. and PPP Project Manager, another 12 successful candidates were able to claim their certificates as qualified knitting technicians. This makes a total of 48 young people who have successfully completed their training in Tirupur. All of them are now successfully making their newly acquired skills available to the Indian knitting industry - which in turn benefits the development of modern technologies from the West. This outcome is fully in keeping with the fundamental principle of the agreement concluded between GTZ and Mayer & Cie.

Based on the exemplary success of the Tirupur venture, a second training institute was inaugurated with the support of Mayer & Cie. at the beginning of January 2002 in Ichalkaranji - at the heart of the Indian textile raw material industry. This Centre has also now already completed 2 six-month courses and provided qualification for a total of 24 students. The growing interest being shown in this new training facility also provides motivation for Mayer & Cie. to continue its active support of the projects.

With this project, the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) is working on behalf of the German Government to support the export of German machinery through modern technology transfer. This is an objective which fits in ideally with the Mayer & Cie. strategy of ensuring that the opportunities offered by the latest machine technology are utilized to maximum benefit, and at the same time allows German manufacturers to compete successfully against international "low-cost" suppliers.
