Mayer & Cie. informs trade visitors at Colombiatex

For 30 years the focus at Colombiatex has been on fashion, ready-to-wear apparel and clothing, and in this area it is the most important trade fair in Latin America. The organisers reported a footfall of more than 20,000 visitors from 23 to 25 January 2018 in this, the event’s jubilee year. Given that textile machinery plays a subordinate role at Colombiatex, Mayer & Cie. (MCT) had only an info stand in Medellín. “Colombia is nonetheless without a doubt an important textile machinery market,” says Horst Maier, Mayer & Cie.’s regional sales manager. Mayer & Cie. regularly receives orders from Colombia for mechanical knitting machines, both Single and Double Jersey. Individual customers are also marketing increasing quantities of jacquard fabrics in Colombia.

Maier acknowledges, however, that Colombia’s textile industry faces challenges. “For one, it is increasingly confronted by illegal imports of cut-price goods from Asia. For another, the important Venezuelan market has shrunk significantly due to political and economic troubles there.” That is why Colombian textile manufacturers are concentrating on their domestic market, which with a population of 48 million is relatively large. For the same reason they are also targeting the US market.

The Colombiatex info stand was organised by Mayer & Cie.’s local representatives, Retexa. Alejandro Blandon took over the agency from his parents in 2017, so Retexa is now collaborating with MCT in the second generation. The slightly larger stand attracted many visitors again this year. For Mayer & Cie.’s Horst Maier exhibiting at Colombiatex is in any case a “must”. “We have here an opportunity to talk with many large customers simply because they too exhibit at Colombiatex. In addition, the fair is always an important guide to fashion and trends in Latin America.
